Europe Wins Euroleague All-Star Game

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

The Euroleague gathered Tuesday in Gdynia, Poland to celebrate its brightest talents in the 2010 Euroleague All-Star Game, once again matching a team of Europe’s top players against the best from the Rest of the World. The Storm was represented by Janell Burse, the starting center for the Rest of the World. Burse played just 11 minutes, grabbing two rebounds and missing her only shot attempt, as Pokey Chatman chose to play small in the middle.

Rebekkah Brunson scored a team-high 15 points and Candice Dupree had 11 points and nine boards, but Europe finished the game on a 7-2 run to win 93-89. Marta Fernandez’s bucket put the Europeans ahead for good, and MVP Agnieszka Bibrzycka capped her 20-point outing by putting the game away with a late three-pointer. That’s it for the Euroleague until next month’s Final Four.

Burse Joins Teammates in Final Four

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The Storm got its first represenative in the Euroleague Final Four, when Sue Bird and Spartak Moscow Region swept their quarterfinal series. A second came Wednesday morning when the Storm signed Ros Casares Valencia forward Jana Vesela. Now, the Storm has a third player in the Euroleague’s showcase event after Janell Burse helped Wisla Can-Pack outlast Frisco Sika Brno 78-73 in the deciding Game 3 of their matchup.

The teams were tied at 65 midway through the fourth quarter, but Wisla controlled the stretch run, reeling off eight unanswered points and a deciding bucket from Marta Fernandez with 12 seconds left in the game. Burse was a major factor, scoring a game-high 20 points on 10-of-17 shooting and adding eight rebounds. Fernandez had 17, Iziane Castro Marques 14 and Ewelina Kobryn a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards. Jelena Skerovic led Brno by scoring 18 points.

The win continues a stunning Euroleague run for Wisla, which only got a chance to play at Europe’s highest level because CSKA Moscow folded before the start of the season. Now, Wisla will join Russian powers Spartak and UMMC Ekaterinburg and Ros Casares in the Final Four, which will take place on April 9 and April 11. The host city has yet to be determined among the finalists.

Spartak, Wisla Start Euroleague Quarters with Wins

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Best-of-three Euroleague Quarterfinal series kicked off with Tuesday’s Game 1s, and both Spartak Moscow Region and Wisla Can-Pack recorded home victories.

Spartak led Turkish power Fenerbahce by 21 with four minutes to play before Fenerbahce finished the game on a 12-2 run to make the final a respectable-looking 90-79 score. Spartak controlled the game from the start, leading by 17 after one quarter. Diana Taurasi was terrific for Spartak, scoring 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Sylvia Fowles added 18 points and 12 boards and Sue Bird was the third Spartak player to reach double-figures, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with four assists. For Fenerbahce, Nicole Powell scored 18 of her 25 points beyond the arc (making six threes in nine tries) and Nevriye Yilmaz added 22 points.

Wisla had a much tougher time against Frisco Sika Brno and trailed by 10 late in the third quarter before erasing the deficit with a 14-2 run in the fourth quarter. Wisla held on to its slim lead by holding Brno scoreless in the game’s final 2:26, with Janell Burse’s bucket at the 16-second mark the only points in that period, leaving Wisla 78-74 winners. Along with Iziane Castro Marques and Ewelina Kobryn, Burse was one of three Wisla players to score 18 points. She filled out her box score with 12 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots in a phenomenal all-around performance. Burse outplayed counterpart Taj McWilliams, who had eight points and 10 boards.

For Le’coe Willingham and Halcon Avenida, Game 1 of their Spanish showdown with Ros Casares Valencia was not as successful. Riding 13 points from Belinda Snell in the first quarter, Ros Casares got off to a fast start and never looked back in a 74-50 win over Avenida. Willingham had a strong outing, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and eight rebounds. As a team, Avenida shot just 34.5 percent from the field in the loss. Snell finished with 21 points.

The action will shift locations as the lower-seeded teams host Game 2s on Friday.

Playoff action also continued Monday in Israel, where Ashley Walker and Maccabi Ashdod finished off a three-game sweep of Raanana Hertzeliya with a 95-69 Game 3 victory. Walker led the way with 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 10 rebounds and six of the team’s 24 assists. Ashdod is still awaiting a semifinal opponent, since all three other series are 2-1 right now. That includes Camille Little and Maccabi Ramat Han trailing Elizur Maccabi Natanya after falling on the road 83-71 on Monday. Little had 26 points and nine boards in a losing effort. Ramat Hen will try to stay alive at home on Thursday in Game 4.

A heartbreaker in China, where Guangdong Asia Aluminum lost Game 1 of its series with the Shenyang Army 83-82 earlier today. Swin Cash had a chance to win the game, but missed at the buzzer. Cash was a big reason why Guangdong was in position to win, scoring 20 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and handing out five assists. Game 2 of the series will be Friday.

Chelsea Newton has a new (old) teammate with Liomatic Umbertide – Ticha Penicheiro, her backcourt-mate for the better part of the last five years in Sacramento, including during the Monarchs run to the 2005 WNBA championship. Penicheiro’s arrival wasn’t enough to snap an Umbertide losing streak (now at four games) in her debut, a 73-68 loss to Erg Power & Gas Priolo. Penicheiro had five points and five assists, while Newton scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out three assists.

Burse Voted Euroleague All-Star

Monday, February 1st, 2010

The Euroleague announced today starting lineups for the March 9 All-Star Game in Gdynia, Poland as voted by fans and Storm center Janell Burse will start in the post for the Rest of the World squad. Along with Burse, this team will start Candice Dupree, Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor and Sophia Young. Agnieszka Bibrzycka, Marta Fernandez, Sandrine Gruda, Becky Hammon and Nevriye Yilmaz will start for the European team. Burse, who leads the Euroleague in rebounding and double-doubles, was an easy selection. Euroleague play resumes Wednesday with the first game of best-of-three eighth-final series.

Burse also helped her TS Wisla Can-Pack team advance to the semifinals of the Polish Cup with an 83-54 win over LKS Siemens Lodz on Wednesday, scoring six points. Lotos Gydnia will also be in the semis, beating Pruszkow 67-52 behind 14 points and eight rebounds from Tanisha Wright. The two teams also scored easy PLKK victories over the weekend, Wisla handling Leszno 86-65 with Burse contributing 11 points in 16 minutes and Wright finishing with 15 points, seven boards and five assists in an 87-63 victory over INEA AZS Poznan.

Despite battling a migraine headache, Lauren Jackson had 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Canberra TransAct Capitals to an 82-62 win over the BDS Logan Thunder on Saturday. Jackson added five blocks in just 23:23 of action, shooting 9-of-18 from the field. Still, the Caps made up no ground on the Sydney Uni Acuvue Flames, who defeated the same Logan team on Friday night, 89-66. Suzy Batkovic-Brown put up 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists, making 10 shots in 17 attempts.

Sydney retains a half-game advantage in the race for second place in the WNBL, but Canberra could pull even by sweeping two games next week at fifth-place Adelaide and home against ninth-place Perth. Sydney visists Townville, which currently sits fourth.

Liomatic Umbertide suffered its second straight loss in Serie A play, falling 61-52 to Lavezzini Parma. Chelsea Newton, who played the full 40 minutes, had six points and three rebounds.

Swin Cash saw her Guangdong Asia Aluminum squad come up short against league-leading Henan Yuguang Gold & Lead over the weekend by an 86-77 final. Cash came within one assist of a triple-double, handing out nine assists in addition to scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 boards.

Wisla Escapes Unscathed

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Gospic Croatia nearly erased Wisla Can-Pack from the ranks of the unbeaten in Euroleague play, but Wisla survived and improved to 5-0 on Iziane Castro Marques‘ winning bucket with 29 seconds left to play. Wisla forced a miss on the other end to defeat Gospic 77-75. After beating the powers of Group B, Wisla got a surprising test from a Gospic team that entered the game 0-4. Wisla’s perfect record looked secure when the team led70-61 with 4:55 left to play, but Gospic followed with a 14-5 run to tie the game before Castro Marques scored the final points.

It was another brilliant effort for Janell Burse, who has firmly established herself as one of the Euroleague’s top posts. She scored a game-high 31 points, making 12 of her 16 shot attempts from the field and 7-of-10 at the free throw line. Burse added 15 boards, good for her fifth double-double in as many games, and four blocked shots. She remains the Euroleague’s leading rebounder at 13.0 a night.

Just two other Euroleague teams remain undefeated. Rivas Ecopolis is 4-0, and Spartak Moscow Region, which has yet to make up a game that was postponed, is 3-0. Both teams will play tomorrow. Midway through play in Group B, Wisla will have a one-game lead over the winner of tomorrow’s matchup between Halcon Avenida Salamanca and Beretta Familia Schio.

On Monday in Israel, Maccabi Ashdod won its fourth straight game to improve to 4-2, good for second place in D-I. The Storm’s Ashley Walker led the way to the 91-85 victory over Elizur Maccabi Natanya with 29 points on 11-of-20 shooting. She grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists.

Wisla Stays Unbeaten in Euroleague

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Consider Wisla Can-Pack the early surprise of Euroleague play. Granted a spot in Group B only when CSKA Moscow was forced to suspend operations days before the start of the season, Janell Burse’s squad has taken full advantage of the opportunity. Today’s 77-71 road win over ESB Lille Metropole moved Wisla to 3-0 in Euroleague play. Ros Casares Valencia is the only other 3-0 team, though three other squads have a chance to match that record by winning tomorrow and Spartak Moscow Region is 2-0 because last week’s game was postponed.

After trailing early, Wisla wrested control of the game in the second quarter and held a Lille comeback attempt at bay with timely scores. Burse was a key player, putting up 15 points and 10 boards for her third straight Euroleague double-double. (She remains the leading rebounder in Euroleague play.) Burse got plenty of help from Polish post Ewelina Kobryn, who also had a double-double while scoring a game-high 24 points.

Over the weekend, Wisla defeated LKS Siemens AGD 78-67 in Polish PLKK play, getting 11 points and six rebounds from Burse in just 18 minutes of action.

Down under, Suzy Batkovic-Brown led the Sydney Uni Acuvue Flames to a 90-51 defeat of an overmatched Dandenong squad. Batkovic-Brown scored 31 points at a point-a-minute pace, shooting 11-of-23 from the field and ripping down 13 rebounds. Through six weeks, Batkovic-Brown is tied for high-scoring honors in the WNBL (PDF) with L.A.’s Kristi Harrower at 25.0 points per game. She’s third in rebounding (9.8 rpg) and blocked shots (2.2 bpg) while also ranking in the top 10 with 1.7 spg.

Maccabi Ashdod earned its first easy victory of the Israeli DI season, defeating Elizur Holon 83-51 to even its record at 2-2. Ashley Walker had 13 points and six boards in the win, which marked the debut of new Ashdod point guard Temeka Johnson. The leader of the WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury replaces injured Natasha Lacy as Ashdod’s third import and starter at the point.

Swin Cash checked in via Twitter to report that her Guangdong Asia Aluminum team won 88-80 on Sunday in WCBA play. Cash contributed 23 points and 14 rebounds and picked up an extraordinarily rare technical foul dealing with physical play.

Burse, Castro Marques Lead Wisla to Win

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

During their time together in Seattle, Janell Burse and Iziane Castro Marques played key roles in plenty of Storm victories. Well, the duo is back at it in Europe. A day after arriving in Poland, Castro Marques scored 22 points in her debut for Wisla Can-Pack Krakow, while Burse posted her second consecutive double-double (18 points, 15 boards) in Wisla’s 85-78 home win over MiZo Pecs 2010. Wisla improved to 2-0 in Euroleague play and is for the moment atop Group BĀ  (the winner of tomorrow’s Beretta-Famila-ESB Lille Metropole tilt will also be 2-0).

“I am very happy,” said Wisla Head Coach Jose Hernandez. “We played very good offense but need to work to improve our game on defense. A great game for Izi Castro and Burse. CongratulationsĀ to the Hungarian team for a very good game.”

Burse has dominated the glass so far in Euroleague play. With 28 rebounds in two games, she leads all players in rebounding.

Burse Participates in Non-Contact Practice

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Storm center Janell Burse participated in the non-contact portion of practice Wednesday after leaving Tuesday’s session early when she experienced a subluxation of her left shoulder. For Burse, the injury was a surprise because it was the first time since May 2007 her shoulder has subluxed, or slipped out of the socket.

“It was more shocking that it actually happened again,” said Burse, “because it hadn’t happened in so long.”

While a partial tear of her shoulder labrum has left Burse vulnerable to subluxations, she has been able to control them by strengthening the surrounding muscles. She did not experience any trouble with the shoulder during the 2007 regular season or in either of her last two overseas campaigns.

Burse underwent X-rays that showed no bone bruising in the area, and is currently day-to-day.

“They just wanted to X-ray it to get a look at everything and make sure everything was still intact because my range of motion was bad yesterday,” she said. “Today it’s much, much better. Hopefully I’ll be fine much faster because I’ve kept strengthening it all this time. I think I’ll come back fast because of that.”

“I think we’re moving forward,” Storm Head Coach Brian Agler said of his team’s health. “The only thing I can say is we’ve got two more days to move forward here and we’re going to move forward.”

Forward Swin Cash participated with contact after being sidelined the last two days by an allergic reaction that caused swelling in her left knee.

With two practices left before Saturday’s season opener in Sacramento (1:00 p.m., Alternative Talk 1150 AM), Agler feels good about his team’s progress, though he won’t really know whether the Storm is ready until the game is played.

“I think when you’re in a situation like this, you never know if you’re prepared or not,” he said. “You try to do your best and you go into the game and see how things play out. You try to prepare your team. Do you underprepare? Do you overprepare? I don’t know. I guess you can answer that question after the game. That’s the only time you really know.”

- The WNBA waiver wire continues to be busy as teams cut down prior to Friday’s deadline for final rosters for the start of the season. However, Agler doesn’t anticipate at this point bringing in a player cut by another team.

“I think, to this point, unless we really get a chance to study it, our 11 I think we have here (in camp),” he said. “Well, our 11 isn’t here because Suzy (Batkovic)’s not here. Once Suzy gets here, I think we’ll get a better evaluation.”

Taranto Advances to EuroCup Final

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

It was all Cras Basket Taranto this morning in the highly-anticipated return leg of the EuroCup semifinal matchup between Taranto and Dynamo Moscow. Dynamo returned home hoping to make up a six-point deficit from last week’s matchup in Italy, and led by three after one quarter. From there, the visitors took control by outscoring Dynamo 23-12 in the second quarter. Taranto cruised to an 85-75 victory that gave them a 161-146 aggregate advantage.

Getting 17 points from Janell Burse on 6-for-9 shooting, Dynamo had a good day on offense. However, the home team simply could not stop Taranto defensively. Taranto shot 58.6 percent from the field and scored at least 20 points in all four quarters. It was Storm center Suzy Batkovic who powered the attack, scoring 24 points and knocking down a pair of three-pointers, hitting 9-of-15 from the field. Megan Mahoney added 19 for Taranto, which also got a strong all-around game from former Storm guard Michelle Greco (six points, three assists and seven steals).

Batkovic and company will play Galatasaray for the EuroCup title after Galatasaray beat Kursk Dynamo 62-39 – holding them to 11 second-half points – to come from behind and take that aggregate series. Galatasaray is led by Seimone Augustus, who had 38 points today to nearly outscore Kursk Dynamo all by herself, as well as Sophia Young. Taranto hosts the first matchup on April 2 before visiting Turkey to complete the EuroCup finals on April 9.

Taranto Takes EuroCup Opening Leg

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Bragging rights and much more are on the line as Storm centers Suzy Batkovic and Janell Burse square off with their respective teams in the EuroCup semifinals. In Thursday’s first game, Batkovic’s host Taranto squad emerged with a 76-71 victory. Because of the aggregate scoring format, the outcome itself was not necessarily as critical as the differential, with teams playing through to the end of regulation. Michelle Greco scored with two seconds on the clock to provide the final margin and give Taranto an extra bucket’s worth of breathing room going into the return leg in Moscow next Thursday.

It looked for a while like Dynamo might head home with the advantage. A Burse jumper midway through the fourth quarter gave Dynamo a four-point advantage, but Taranto would outscore the visitors 15-6 the rest of the way. The key was Greco, the former Storm guard who scored eight points in that span, adding three steals and an assist.

Burse scored 14 of her 17 points after halftime, adding nine rebounds. She was part of a trio of Dynamo players, along with Belinda Snell (23 points) and Anete Jekabsone-Zogota (15) who had strong games. The rest of the team, however, combined for 16 points on 4-of-16 shooting from the field.

Taranto got more balanced production, with four players scoring double-figures. Megan Mahoney led the way with 19 points, with Batkovic adding 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.

In Thursday’s other semifinal opener, Kursk Dynamo triumphed 61-47 at home over Galatsaray. The two-game aggregate series will be completed next Thursday, with the winners advancing to meet each other wih the EuroCup championship – and a spot in Euroleague for the 2009-10 season – on the line.
