State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Women’s basketball returned to KeyArena on Wednesday with the State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic, a four-team tournament hosted by Seattle University that continues tonight.

The marquee matchup on the first day was supposed to be between point guards Courtney Vandersloot of Gonzaga and Skylar Diggins of Notre Dame. Both floor generals played well, but they were overshadowed by Fighting Irish wing Natalie Novosel, who scored a career-high 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Despite Novosel’s production, the Zags still led a back-and-forth game 55-54 with 8:20 left to play before going cold. Gonzaga would manage just six points the rest of the way as Notre Dame opened up a lead. The return to the game of post Devereaux Peters, who missed most of the second half with four fouls, swung the game.

Playing in front of Tulsa Shock Head Coach Nolan Richardson – who drafted Bulldogs forward Vivian Frieson in the third round of the 2010 WNBA Draft – Vandersloot had 10 points and seven assists, though she shot just 4-of-14 from the field. Diggins, a talented sophomore who was everywhere on the court, scored 19 points, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and handed out five assists, though she also committed eight turnovers.

In the nightcap, the Loyola Marymount Lions built an early 18-4 lead over the hosts, who could never climb all the way back in the game despite playing even thereafter. Seattle U got 18 points from Federal Way native Salena Dickerson. But Renahy Young led Loyola Marymount with 22 points and a pair of Lions (Melany Ysaguirre, with 12; and Camille Buckley, with 10) grabbed double-figure rebounds as LMU dominated the glass by a 53-30 margin.

Seattle U and Gonzaga will get a chance to end the tournament with a win tonight, when they will face each other at 7 p.m. in the conclusion of the State Farm Holiday Hoops Classic. Before that, Notre Dame takes on Loyola Marymount at 4:30 p.m.

Storm Updates

Monday, December 27th, 2010

This figures to be a quiet week for Storm news, what with all but one player overseas off for the holidays. The WCBA is still in action, and Swin Cash’s DongGuan New Century Club team suffered its first loss on Dec. 21. Cash also announced last week that she will be blogging for SlamOnline.com as part of Slam’s terrific WNBA coverage. Here’s the link to Cash’s first entry.

The WNBA.com Amazing Photo of the Year bracket presented by HP has moved into the quarterfinals, with the Storm represented by four of the eight remaining photos. Be sure to vote this week for Lauren Jackson and Candace Parker tipping off the Sunset Showdown as well as LJ and Sue Bird celebrating the Storm’s victory in Phoenix.

Speaking of voting, you can still support Svetlana Abrosimova for FIBA Europe Women’s Player of the Year and Cash for Seattle Professional Sports Star of the Year. The Euroleague has also begun voting for this year’s All-Star Game with Jackson on the ballot. We’ll see whether Bird makes an appearance when she begins playing for Spartak Moscow Region in the new year.

One honor the Storm was up for has been announced. Former Minnesota Lynx Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio, now coaching the Duquesne women, beat out Tanisha Wright for the Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year award in Wright’s native Pittsburgh.

MSNBC.com highlights Brian Agler about to get doused with champagne as a top photo that did not make its Best of 2010 slideshow. The look on Coach Agler’s face in this shot is priceless.

Notes on the Schedule

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

The release of the WNBA’s schedule is always a key milestone as we move out of recapping the previous season and start looking ahead to the upcoming campaign. Here are a few things that stand out looking at the Storm’s schedule for 2011:

- 10 Weekend Home Games. That’s the most since 2008. In particular, there are lots of Friday and Saturday games – four apiece.

- Threes are Wild. The Storm will play four road trips of three games apiece, making up most of the away schedule. There is no trip longer than three games and only one down-and-back trip (to Phoenix). The most difficult road trip might be a two-game visit to Atlanta and New York with just one day off before and after and a 12 noon Pacific start against the Dream on a Sunday afternoon.

- Two Back-to-Backs. Both of them will involve Tulsa. The Storm faces Minnesota on July 29 and the Shock on July 30. The road schedule then wraps up with a game in Tulsa on Sept. 2 and at San Antonio on Sept. 3.

- Three Visits by the Silver Stars. The 12-game league means five-game season series against two Western Conference opponents. San Antonio comes to KeyArena on July 21, Aug. 2 and Aug. 23. Meanwhile, the Storm will make three trips to the Shock, with the other one coming on June 21.

- The No. 1 Pick Comes to Town. The Storm’s second home game of the season should be an exciting one as the Minnesota Lynx visit with the No. 1 overall pick (barring a trade). That player will almost certainly be UConn forward Maya Moore.

- Homestands. The Storm opens the season with three games at KeyArena. There is also a four-game homestand from Aug. 20 through 28, part of a month in which the Storm will play eight of its 12 games at home (after being on the road for nine out of 12 in July). The Storm then wraps things up with the last two games of the regular season in front of the home crowd against Phoenix and Chicago.

You can ensure you’ll be there for all the excitement by getting Storm season tickets today.

Ekaterinburg Stomps Spartak in Russian Showdown

Monday, December 20th, 2010

The biggest game of the first half of the Russian Superleague regular season was over early. UMMC Ekaterinburg jumped all over Spartak Moscow Region from the opening tip on Sunday, leading 26-9 after one quarter en route to an 82-53 victory. Spartak had a tough time getting anything going on offense. Reserve Elena Milovanovic scored 17 points and Epiphanny Prince added 14, but the remainder of the team shot a combined 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) from the field. Lauren Jackson was one of the players having a quiet night. Jackson played just 11 minutes, scoring one point and missing both of her attempts from the field.

On the other side, UMMC’s frontline was dominant. Maria Stepanova led the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Sandrine Gruda and Crystal Langhorne scored 16 apiece. Agneiszka Bibrzycka supplied the perimeter punch, scoring 12 of her 14 points from beyond the arc. Svetlana Abrosimova was scoreless in her 4:30 of action, but Ekaterinburg outscored Spartak by seven points during that span.

UMMC heads into the holiday break undefeated in Russian play at 9-0, while Spartak is tied with Nadezhda for second at 7-2. Spartak will hope to make a run in 2011 with Sue Bird in the lineup.

Ros Casares Valencia went into the break on a high note, blowing out Hondarribia-Irun 93-50. Jana Vesela, who scored 10 points, was one of six Ros Casares players in double-figures. Katie Douglas led the team by scoring 17 points. Hondarribia-Irun shot 36 percent from the field and turned the ball over 24 times. The big story in the Liga Feminina was Rivas Ecopolis knocking off Halcon Avenida, which means Ros Casares (12-1) moves into a tie with Avenida for first in the standings at the midway point.

Swin Cash’s DongGuan New Century Club team got another win on Saturday to move to 5-0 this season in WCBA play. Check out SwinCash.com for more on Cash’s performance.

Playing at home, the Canberra TransAct Capitals saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Townsville Fire on Friday by a 77-70 final. A mammoth outing by Marianna Tolo (29 points and 16 boards) was not enough. Guards Rachel Alexander and Rachael Flanagan scored 19 points apiece for Townsville, which led the entire fourth quarter. Alison Lacey had two points and two assists for Canberra.

The Dandeong Jayco Rangers continue to struggle. On Saturday, they suffered their third consecutive loss, falling 77-67 to the Sydney University Flames. Abby Bishop had four points, five rebounds and three assists for Dandenong, while Ashley Robinson scored six points. Natalie Stafford came up with a huge effort for Sydney, which outscored Dandenong 45-26 after halftime. Stafford scored a game-high 26 points.

Storm Assists Emergency Feeding Program

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Storm employees, including Head Coach Brian Agler and CEO Karen Bryant, took time out from their busy schedules on Thursday morning to volunteer at the Emergency Feeding Program of Seattle and King Country.

Founded in 1977, the EFP works to help individuals and families make ends meet by providing food to the hungry. One of EFP’s core principles is the importance of providing nutritionally balanced meals that fit the various needs of the people they are serving. The EFP prepares 14 different varieties of food bags. Storm staff, with the aid of students from nearby Dearborn Park Elementary School, filled hundreds of these bags and also donated non-perishable food to the EFP.

Visit the Emergency Feeding Program website to find out more about how you can help their mission this holiday season and beyond.

Spartak Heads Into Euroleague Break with Blowout

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Today’s round of Euroleague matchups was the last before the schedule takes a three-week break for the holidays. Spartak Moscow Region went into the break in style, dominating ZVVZ USK Praha 85-54 at home. Spartak pulled away during the third quarter, extending its lead from 10 to 23, and outscored Praha 48-27 after the break. Playing against rival DeLisha Milton-Jones, Lauren Jackson scored 14 points in 20 minutes on 4-of-7 shooting. Epiphanny Prince scored 18 points for Spartak, while Anete Jekabsone-Zogota scored 15 and Irina Osipova finished with 14 points and seven boards.

With two games left to play, Spartak controls its own destiny in terms of finishing atop Group C. By the time Euroleague play resumes on Jan. 13, Spartak will have Sue Bird back in the lineup.

Meanwhile, Ros Casares Valencia assumed sole possession of first place in Group D with a 65-51 win over Beretta-Famila Schio on Wednesday. Rebekkah Brunson, who posted a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds, controlled the inside while Katie Douglas poured in 18 points from the perimeter. Brunson outplayed counterpart Janel McCarville, who finished with two points on 1-of-5 shooting as Schio struggled to score. The visitors shot 35.4 percent from the field and turned the ball over 22 times. Jana Vesela had three points off the bench for Ros Casares.

Swin Cash is keeping fans up to date on all her exploits over in China via SwinCash.com. Tuesday’s win moved DongGuan New Century Club into first place in the WCBA at 4-0. Cash is averaging 13.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game thus far.

In domestic play, Spartak narrowly pulled out a 59-54 win over Dynamo Moscow on Sunday. Jackson had 13 points and seven boards in the defensive struggle. Her late three-pointer was the last basket for Spartak, which held on at the free throw line. Prince, who scored 15, was the only other Spartak player to reach double-figure scoring.

Down under, the Canberra TransAct Capitals romped past the Australian Institute of Sport 96-56 without Alison Lacey. Jessica Bibby was on fire for the Caps, knocking down nine three-pointers in 15 attempts en route to 38 points. Carly Wilson added 18 points in 20 minutes. On Saturday, the visiting West Coast Waves knocked off the Dandenong Jayco Rangers 77-72. Samantha Norwood, who scored a game-high 24 points, made the go-ahead bucket with 43 seconds left and Abby Bishop missed a triple with 16 seconds left that could have tied the game. It was a long night for Bishop, who fouled out with 10 points and seven rebounds and shot 4-of-17 from the field. Ashley Robinson had two rebounds.

A typically workmanlike victory for Ros Casares Valencia, which topped Soller Bon Dia! 81-54 on Saturday. Six Ros Casares players scored at least eight points, led by 16 from Marta Fernandez. Nuria Martinez contributed 12 points and seven assists. Vesela had four points and five rebounds. Shay Murphy scored 28 of Soller’s 54 points.

In Israel, Elizur Ramla got an easy 111-62 win over Hapoel Tel Aviv on Monday. Hapoel is playing with just five players, a situation that led Head Coach Barak Glozer to quit at game’s end. Tanisha Wright scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting and Le’coe Willingham had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Camille Little had a double-double of her own (17 points, 12 boards) as Electra Ramat Hasharon defeated Elizur Rishon 85-69. Alexis Hornbuckle added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Abrosimova, Wright Up for Awards

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

In the wake of the Storm’s championship season, a growing number of Storm players are up for awards.

Russian wing Svetlana Abrosimova is one of the candidates for the FIBA Europe Women’s Player of the Year. Abrosimova took home a pair of trophies in 2010, winning the Russian Superleague with UMMC Ekaterinburg before helping key the Storm’s title run. She’s up against three other players who were in the WNBA in 2010 (Atlanta’s Yelena Leuchanka and Connecticut’s Anete Jekabsone-Zogota and Sandrine Gruda) as well as other stars like Ann Wauters and Amaya Valdemoro. Voting will be open through the end of January.

Meanwhile, Tanisha Wright is up for an honor in her native Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette annually presents the Dapper Dan Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, the Steel City’s equivalent to the Seattle Sports Star of the Year awards. Wright is one of four candidates for Sportswoman of the Year, with voting open through next Monday. One of the other candidates is former Minnesota Lynx Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio, now coaching at Duquesne University.

Abrosimova and Wright join teammates Lauren Jackson (USSA Athlete of the Year) and Swin Cash (Professional Sports Star of the Year) as Storm players in need of your votes. And don’t forget to vote for the Storm as the Seattle Sports Story of the Year, also part of the Sports Star awards.

Around the Web: Dec. 9

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

While some of these have appeared on Twitter and Facebook, it’s been a while since we’ve taken a tour of the Internet to find interesting links related to the Storm and the WNBA.

- John Altavilla of the Hartford Courant talks to Sue Bird about the UConn women winning streak, which stands at 86 and counting – two shy of the NCAA Division I record set by the UCLA men from 1971 through 1974.

Said Bird at Tuesday’s Husky practice: “My favorite part of the streak is that it encompasses, for me, who and what Coach Auriemma is,. He comes to practice every day expecting you to play well, play perfectly, if you will. That’s what the streak is; it’s going out every night, playing well and beating everybody. That’s what he expects. So for someone like Coach Auriemma to have this streak, it’s almost fitting.”

- This is really cool. At last weekend’s Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Contest at Westlake Center, the Beaconettes paid tribute to the Storm as part of their highlights of 2010 in Seattle (in the form of The 12 Days of Christmas).

- ESPNW launched this week. The website will augment ESPN’s existing coverage of women’s athletics and provide a central homebase for it. Among the many contributors to ESPNW are current WNBA players Tamika Catchings and Kara Lawson.

- The WNBA Board of Governor Meetings are taking place this week in New York. The board voted yesterday in favor of expanded use of instant replay. The changes bring the WNBA in line with the NBA’s current rules regarding instant replay.

- With two Storm photos already in the semis, voting continues in the WNBA Photo of the Year contest presented by HP. This week, the photo of Bird and Lauren Jackson celebrating the championship is up against one of the rival Phoenix Mercury. Vote now!

- The big news at the league level remains President Donna Orender announcing her resignation, effective Dec. 31. That Orender would want to find a way to spend more time with her family while launching a marketing and consulting firm came as no stunner to anyone who had interacted with Orender, as I have at times over the years. I remember her lamenting her ever-present Blackberry several years ago while we rode the elevator up to the then-Sonics & Storm offices. Orender juggled checking in back home with her busy schedule of duties as league president, which is always a challenge.

As for the future of the league and Orender’s successor, NBA Commissioner David Stern discussed those topics to ESPN’s Mechelle Voepel.

“Any head of a league has his or her own personality that impacts the league,” Stern said. “I would like to continue the growth that we’ve seen in Donna’s watch, particularly in the fact that there is a lot to be said about having great role models for young women who want to compete in sports, business and life.

“We have a successful collective bargaining agreement. There’s been a very great mood set here. We just have to make it all continue to work and grow the revenue of the league.”

Spartak Falls to Galatasaray in OT Thriller

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

One of Spartak Moscow Region’s best performances of the season came in their Euroleague victory over Galatasaray in Vidnoje, when they held the Turkish club’s stars (Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles) in check defensively. Wednesday was the return game, as Spartak visited Istanbul, and Augustus and Fowles were ready. The result was tight basketball for 45 minutes before Galatasaray finally emerged with the 85-83 victory in overtime.

It was Lauren Jackson who preserved the tie by blocking a Galatasaray attempt just before the regulation buzzer.  She then made a three-pointer with four seconds left in OT to give Spartak a chance to tie or take the lead after former Storm guard Doneeka Hodges split two free throws. But there was too little time left and Epiphanny Prince turned the ball over before Spartak could get off a final attempt. Jackson scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots. She made four three-pointers. Prince added 17, but Galatasaray had three high scorers. Augustus, Fowles and Hodges – all of whom played at LSU under Spartak Head Coach Pokey Chatman – combined for 58 points and made 22 of their 43 shot attempts.

In Group D, Bourges Basket used home-court advantage to knock off Ros Casares Valencia 58-55 for Ros Casares’ second consecutive loss after a 5-0 start. Edwige Lawson – another of those former Storm backup point guards – put Ros Casares ahead with a three-pointer with 2:14 to play. However, Ros Casares would not score again. Back-to-back Endene Miyem scores gave Bourges the lead for good. Miyem led her team with 14 points. Lawson and Rebekkah Brunson had 15 apiece for Ros Casares, which is now tied for the group lead with Bourges. Jana Vesela contributed four points and three rebounds.
